Offering grocery shoppers increased access to nutritional information, Guiding Stars, an at-a-glance nutrition rating system from Guiding Stars Licensing Co., Scarborough, ME, has partnered with a top-selling iPhone shopping assistant application, ReachEverywhere’s Shopper. The application helps consumers identify foods on their shopping list that provide the most nutrition for the calories. Guiding Stars utilizes a proprietary algorithm to credit all edible foods based on the presence of vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber and whole grains, and debits for the presence of trans fat, saturated fats, cholesterol, added sugars and added sodium. Food items are then awarded zero, one, two or three stars based on nutritional value.
